Honed or Polished? Choosing Your Driveway Finish

Honed and polished driveways start the same way. We grind the slab with diamond tooling to cut back the surface and expose the stone. The difference is how far we take it.

Honed driveway Polished driveway
Look Matte to satin, natural stone Satin to high sheen, reflects light
Grip when wet Good with a more slip-resistant sealer Lower; needs a more slip-resistant sealer and a lower gloss level
Heat underfoot Stays cooler in summer Similar, slightly warmer with darker mixes
Hides tyre marks and dust Better Shows more
Best for Open driveways, slopes, front entries Covered carports, flat entries, feature driveways

Most Perth homeowners choose honed for an open driveway. Polished suits a flat or covered area where the look comes first.

Honed Concrete Driveways

A honed concrete driveway gives you the stone of exposed aggregate with a smooth, flat surface that is easy on bare feet and easy to hose clean. It is the finish we recommend for most Perth driveways.

We grind to the depth you choose. A light grind gives a soft “cream” look with a few stones showing. A deeper grind opens up a salt and pepper or full aggregate finish. We then seal with a UV-stable, more slip-resistant sealer so the surface holds its colour through Perth summers and keeps its grip after rain.

Honing a new driveway

We work alongside your builder or concreter. Once the slab has cured, we grind, hone and seal it to the finish you picked from our samples. Talk to us before the pour so the mix and aggregate suit the look you want.

Honing an existing exposed aggregate driveway

If your exposed aggregate driveway is rough, stained or hard to keep clean, we can grind back the high points of the stone. You keep the decorative aggregate and lose the sharp texture that traps dirt and leaf litter. If the slab is sound, honing and resealing usually costs far less than ripping out and re-pouring.

Polished Concrete Driveways

A polished concrete driveway goes further than honing. We step through finer diamond pads and densify the slab until it takes on a sheen, from a soft satin to a near-mirror finish. It makes a strong first impression and resists oil and grease stains well.

Keeping a polished driveway safe

A high-gloss polish can be slippery when wet. For driveways we keep the sheen at satin or semi-gloss and finish with a more slip-resistant sealer. On a slope or an open driveway that takes regular rain, we will usually recommend honed instead. We would rather tell you that upfront than have you skid on your own driveway.

Where polished works best

  • Covered carports and garage aprons
  • Flat entries and porte cocheres
  • Feature driveways that flow into polished floors inside
  • Commercial entries, showrooms and display driveways (see our commercial and retail polished concrete)

Colour and Aggregate Options

The stone in your slab sets the final look. Popular Perth choices are light greys for a modern home, warm creams and browns to match limestone, and dark charcoal mixes for contrast. Integral colour is added to the mix before the pour; stains and tinted sealers can adjust the tone of an existing slab. Ask us about samples, or browse driveway projects in our gallery.

Caring for Your Driveway

A honed or polished driveway needs a sweep, a hose down and a pressure clean now and then. Clean oil drips early. Reseal every two to three years to protect against stains and keep the grip. Our guide to maintaining your honed or polished concrete driveway covers the rest.

Concrete Driveway FAQs

Is a honed concrete driveway slippery?

Not when it is sealed correctly. We finish honed driveways with a more slip-resistant sealer that gives grip in wet weather. Very steep driveways may still need extra texture, and we will flag that at the measure.

Is a polished concrete driveway slippery when wet?

A high-gloss polish can be. For driveways we keep the sheen lower and add a more slip-resistant sealer. On sloped or open driveways we usually recommend honed instead.

Will tyres leave marks on a honed driveway?

Turning tyres can leave light marks on any smooth concrete, especially when the car is turned while stationary. A quality sealer makes marks easier to clean, and a mid-tone or aggregate-heavy finish hides them better than a plain light grey.

Can you hone or polish my existing driveway?

Yes, if the slab is sound. We assess cracks, movement and old coatings at the free measure. Honing an existing exposed aggregate driveway is often far cheaper than replacing it.

How often does a honed concrete driveway need resealing?

Every two to three years, depending on sun, traffic and how often it gets washed.
